Eighty-three (83) more days until the most highly anticipated sporting event of the year;
the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Many will gather on June 14th to witness the opening ceremony in Russia, and millions more will look on from the comfort their homes. The tournament will run from June 14th to July 15th, involving 32 national teams, and 64 matches, at 12 venues, in 11 cities.
The tournament is held every 4 years and the reigning champions, Germany, are still ranked number 1 in the world. The Germans won the title in 2014 after a 1-0 victory over Argentina with the winner coming from midfielder Mario Gotze in the 112th minute of extra time. The Germans were also champions of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. Just today, a series of warm-up friendlies were held ahead of the 2018 World Cup and this time the reigning champions only managed a 1-1 draw with South American giants, Argentina.
Below is a table of FIFA’s Men’s Top 10 World Ranking
Dominica is currently ranked at 166 ahead of Puerto Rico, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Cuba, and Bermuda to name a few. Hopefully, the upcoming Windward Islands Tournament will be used as a stepping stone to rack up some wins and build momentum moving forward.
