The Sports Division of the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture and Constituency Empowerment, on Thursday, January 26th, 2017 kicked off thet 2017 NBD Primary Schools Football Championships.
The Opening Ceremony began at 10:00 am at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium with the first round of matches in which the schools from the South West Zone were seeking to qualify to the next round.
Addresses came from the Sports Coordinator – Mr. Trevor Shillingford, Councilor and the Representative of the Mayor of Roseau – Ms. Kimara Hurtault, Executive Manager – Marketing and Community Relations at the National Bank of Dominica – Mrs. Suzanne Joseph-Piper, Member of Parliament for the Roseau Central Constituency – Hon. Joseph Isaac and the Minister of Youth, Sports, Culture & Constituency Empowerment – Hon. Justina Charles.
This is the 8th year that the National Bank of Dominica has consecutively sponsored the championship – the Bank will provide fifteen thousand dollars (EC $15, 000.00) towards the running of the championship. The Bank will also reward the winners of the various championships at the completion of the competition in a ceremony which will be held especially in their honor.
Over fifty (50) schools are expected to take part in this year’s boys championship. The schools will be separated into eight (8) zones and matches played in a Round Robin format at various venues on island. Twenty four (24) teams will advance to the Intermediate round which will then be followed by the Knock Out stage.
The Girls Festival and District Championship will take place later in the school term.
The St. Mary’s Primary won the boys’ segment, Woodford Hill Primary won the girls’ segment whilst the North East won the District Championship in the 2016 championships.
