Dominican Sprinter Hoping To Qualify For Rio Olympics

Sprinter Mitchel Davis

We caught up with young aspiring sprinter Mitchel Davis from Dominica who has been at the Racers Track Club in Kingston, Jamaica for training purposes. The same track club used by Usian Bolt. On his journey in becoming a professional athlete, Davis hopes to qualify for the Rio Olympic Games this summer.

Davis started doing athletics while in 3rd form at the St. Mary’s Academy. He competes in the 100m, 200m and 400m but said that he specializes in the 200m.

Here’s a glimpse of what Mr. Davis told us earlier this week:

“I’m currently based in Jamaica for training. In 2013 I received a scholarship from the (IAAF) International Association of Athletics Federations.

I’m not on the professional level yet but I’m getting there. I’m currently based at the Racers Track Club, the training ground of legends. Same club as the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt.

I’ve won some small races here in Jamaica thus far for the season. My biggest accomplishment for the season so far, was coming 2nd in the 200m at the Chris Brown International Invitation in Bahamas earlier in April.

My goals for this year are to qualify for the Rio Olympics in the 200m and break the national 100m record”.

Below are some notable achievements of the sprinter:

  • 1st place at the OECS Championships in 2012 and 2013 in the 400m
  • Semi finalist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland
  • 2nd at the OECS Championships in 2014 in the 200m

When asked what would he like to say to the upcoming athletes in Dominica he replied:

“I’d like to tell them never give up on your dreams and goals, keep working hard until your talents are recognized. Believe that you can achieve and you will achieve”. Some powerful words by the youngster.

He’ll be competing at the OECS Championships in July and is looking forward to winning gold in the 200m. Hopefully he’ll win gold, make himself proud, his family and of course his country Dominica, the Nature Island of the Caribbean. We wish success.
