Independence Athletics Preliminaries

The Sports Division in the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture & Constituency Empowerment is pleased to inform of the return of the Independence Athletics Meets for the Primary Schools.

We are very fortunate in Dominica to be able to kick off these competitions as TS Matthew which recently affected Dominica did not cause severe damage. Our prayers are with Haiti, Cuba and Jamaica, as it appears that they have suffered the most from the passage of TS Matthew. We are well aware of the devastation which may be caused as a result of a Tropical Storm, since last year we were unable to have such activities after the passage of TS Erika.

The Primary Schools Athletics Preliminaries for 2016 got on the way today, Wednesday, October 5th, with competitions at two (2) venues.  The North Zone preliminaries will held at the Benjamin’s Park in Portsmouth, the South Zone Preliminaries will take place at Potterville whilst the schools in the South East Zone will compete at Castle Bruce from 10:00 am. The North Zone which was scheduled for October 5th at Benjamin’s Park in Portsmouth had to be postponed to October 13th due to water logged conditions at that venue.

On October 6th, the Preliminaries for the North West Zone will take place at Dublanc whilst the schools in the South West will converge at the Pottersville Savannah.

Meanwhile, the Sports Division will also kick-off the 2016 Secondary Schools Football Championships today, Wednesday, October 5th.  The traditional ballorama will be used to open this championship from 2:30 pm at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium

Champion Houses in the sport of football from the various secondary schools will participate in the ball-o-rama: the winning house will be declared the House Champions for 2016. This year’s Secondary Schools Football Championship will be played in four (4) divisions – the 13 & Under, Under -15, Under -17 and Under-20.Regular league matches amongst the schools will commence on October 17th.
